SCCS: Acetophenone Safe Up to 100 ppm in Finished Cosmetics

17 Sept 2026 · 11:59 PM ET · TheSkindex Desk · automated monitoring, not yet reviewed by an editor

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has concluded that acetophenone (CAS 98-86-2) is safe for use in finished cosmetic products at concentrations up to 100 ppm (0.01%), according to Opinion SCCS/1689/26, adopted 30 April 2026 and published 4 May 2026.1

The Opinion assesses fragrance use and related cosmetic exposure. As with other SCCS opinions, the conclusion is a safety limit for the finished product, not an efficacy claim, and it applies in the EU regulatory frame unless and until other jurisdictions adopt a parallel measure.1

Canada's Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist should be checked separately before treating the SCCS figure as a Canadian cosmetics rule.
