Dimethicone is a linear silicone polymer used as an emollient, occlusive, and skin protectant. It forms a water-resistant film that lowers TEWL while feeling lighter than petrolatum[1][2].

What it does

Film-forming occlusion, slip, and sensory modification. FDA recognises dimethicone as an OTC skin protectant active[1]. CIR assessed dimethicone polymers as safe in cosmetics[2].

The evidence

Protectant monograph status and long cosmetic use support safety and TEWL reduction; it is not an active in the niacinamide/retinoid sense.

How to use it

Common in moisturisers, primers, and balms. Generally non-comedogenic relative to heavy oils for many users, though formula context matters.
