Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) was a classic UVB filter. FDA final order OTC000008-1 removes it from OTC Monograph M020, concluding sunscreen products containing PABA are not generally recognized as safe and effective[1].

Why it matters

Historical concerns include allergic and photoallergic reactions. FDA’s notice states the agency is unaware of currently marketed U.S. sunscreens still using PABA[1].
